View Full Version : Is somebody trying to hack into my computer?

Every once in a while, my firewall (Norton Personal Firewall)) reports a Security Alert, and that it's blocking a "backdoor.subseven" remote access Trojan.

The "attacking" IP address changes every time. I'm not sure what that means, except that tracing this guy will be hard. What should I do?

Help me, please..:(

Ah, SubSeven is a rather annoying backdoor trojan. Its a good thing you have software in place to block it, because, in a worst case scenario, it can cause physical damage to you or your computer. (I've had it happen to me before. My head was near the cd tray when it popped open. OW!)

Anyway, I forgot what I did to get rid of it, but theres more than likely a guide to getting rid of it online somewhere.

I think SpyBot S&D works too. Just a second, I'll edit this post when/if I find something.

EDIT: Okay here, some instructions.

If I were you, I'd definitely do a full virus scan, or at least go to http://housecall.antivirus.com and see if they can't fix it. Removing stuff by hand works, but it is tedious and if you miss just one piece, I've seen stuff that can reinstall itself. When dealing with a trojan, you can never be too careful.

It might just be that you are a target of a random scan. They scan zillions, technical term, of ip addresses for one that they can usurp. My firewall gets them all the time. The attacks you don't see a record of are the ones you need to worry about. But yeah an AV program could check you for trojans. Try Ad-aware to check for spyware as well.
P.S. AtmaWeapon is the "profit" title from slashdot? Or is it coincedental?

I read through that page Meatwad linked, man, what a mess that trojan is. I'd rather let an anti-virus program take care of it. I used to use McAffee way back when, but it was a pain. I like the Norton products a lot better.

Housecall is a pretty neat. You just download a plugin to IE and it scans for viruses from the internet! It's not a full blown anti-virus app (it doesn't offer you 24/7 protection) but it will scan for and remove viruses. Check it out: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Thank you for all of your help. I'm looking into the situation now.

*Off topic, but oft-requested*

I don't clearly remember my inspiration behind the title. I think it probably had something to do with a topic I posted in. I vaguely remember something I got worked up over. I think maybe someone mentioned how spot-on Nostradamus was about something, and I related my belief that anyone who wrote that cryptically and prolifically was bound to get it right. Then I somehow came to the conclusion you could be a prophet for profit.

Go with a virus scan, young man.

Oh yeah, that's how you spell prophet...funny how your mind plays tricks when you read too fast. It works both ways, cause Magus goes back in time and disguises himself as a prophet who can see the future and profits from it! :D

I think you should punch him for that, Kamaria.

I got bored and did the online virus scan...I have 3 trojans! lol

Which I happened to get rid out. :D

(Sorry, I've started doing something new so I don't bias my posts against people I don't know. I don't look at a poster's name unless I am quoting them. I didn't stop and think that in doing this, I could make gender errors pretty easily.)

I've got an idea....

*hands Atma a Zeeky bomb and runs away*

Bomb: "Zeeky boogy doog!" (H-bomb explosion)

Hehe... don't take too much offense to it. Understand that two things are well-known on this forum:
1. Avatars have little if any correlation to the gender of their users.
2. Guys significantly outnumber girls among the forum population.

For these two reasons, when an user of unknown gender is seen, it's difficult to guess gender, and often "male" is assumed. At other times, the avatar is used as an indicator (despite rule #1), which might cause "male" or "female" to be assumed.

You're certainly not the first one to fall victim to a gender confusion. ;)

sub-7 is the most netourios trojan out there. Youll need to get avg from www.agv.com and do a scan. Good thing you have a firewall because if u didnt they would be controling your pc and showing you gay porn.
