It could happen? (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=533&e=2&u=/ap/20040109/ap_on_go_pr_wh/bush_space)

I've always missed the days before I was born, when people actually cared about space, and exploring the final frontier...

Yeah, I profoundly doubt anything like that will ever actually happen during my lifetime. With no Sputnik or Space Race to provide motivation, any space projects are certain to get canned when the budget gets tight.

Although you have to admit that an actual moon base would be pretty cool.

I can see it now... "Moon Base Alpha, brought to you by McDonald's." Their first priority will be to carve giant arches on the moon's surface, visible from Earth.

... Hey, it'd solve the funding problem, anyhow. ;)

unless the chinese continue pushing their space program. although it wouldn't escalate into a cold war, it could give the US the kick in the ass it needs to get moving

Now, if the moon base is just put under the surface, we can solve that little problem of understanding what the man in the moon is. ;)
