I just saw on the news that Shanghei gained 3 million people last year to a total of 20 million. Can you believe that one city gained as many people as the entire USA? And to think that just 50 years ago or so New York had the largest at only 5 million.

Perhaps a re-write is in order of your post, one that actually makes sense. Shanghei gaining 3 million people, totalling 30 million, is somehow equivalent to the United States' population (which as of 2003 was approximately 289 million)?

Do you mean that Shanghei has more people than any other city in the United States?
