Apparently, Gator needs a new start. They have changed their name to Claria. So, if you see near files appear on your computer bearing the name of Claria, don't be fooled. It is just Gator in disguise.

Good to know. I run Ad-Aware maybe twice a week, as often as I get updates for it.

I use Spybot Search and Destroy (http://security.kolla.de) because I found AdAware to be ineffective at removing some things. Namely, when the Xupiter toolbar was plaguing me, AdAware (with an update set from the same day) claimed everything was fine. Spybot removed Xupiter. Therefore, I don't trust AdAware anymore.

Besides, Spybot has a stripped down version of and a link to Javacool's SpywareBlaster. (http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareblaster.html) This nifty program intercepts the nice little ActiveX controls that would install things like Xupiter and Gator and I don't even see them anymore. I have actually stopped my regular Spybot scans because over the last 4 months, I have had 0 instances of spyware on my system. :)

Guess what?

I have Gator because it holds all my dad's "important passwords".

Fortunately, the spyware portion can be shut down with Task Manager.

Thanks for the heads-up. I wouldn't have known otherwise.
