I have a bunch of AVI files i need to convert to RM and i can't find a piece of software that would work indefinately.
first question, what a RM file? I know what a AVI is, but I've never heard of a RM before...

Why would you need to convert them to RM? Real Media Player sucks.
Did you run a search on google?

to linkofzelda1: because the files are about 2/3 the size of an equivilant (i think) .avi file.

From what I understand, you don't need to convert to .RM to get small size. Have you tried DivX? It works woth .AVI files and in my opinioion looks a hell of a lot better, not to menntion that it doesn't require that god-awful RealOne player.
I couldn't tell you the first thing about how to encode movies though. And it's not as simple as hitting a switch or running a program, either...at least, not if you want any sort of quality.

For video encoding queries (and digital video queries, as well) www.dvdrhelp.com can't be beat.
[edit] This is in response to Alex's DixV recommendation. You do not want to chose .rm over divx.
