And we all know how effective in the past Congress has been at curtailing action online...

I have a Junk Mail folder in Outlook 2k3. All my spam goes there. Why do I care if Congress passes an anti-spam bill if I'm not affected by spam?

Still, though, this could be a springboard for more regulation on the Web. Whether that is a good or bad thing remains to be seen...

I read about this too. It still has to get through the House of Representatives and then get signed by The President, but that 97-0 vote are pretty good odds! Lets hope everyone else feels like the Senate does!

I bet this bill will go far. No human with an internet connection is exempt from spam, not even the government.

The question is, if it passes... Will it do any good?

There's at least one good reason that even people with excellent SPAM filters should support this bill - bandwidth. I can't imagine how much bandwidth would be freed up if all spamming stopped.

I understand that some spammers are complaining that their right to free speech is being taken away (like freedom of speech means the right to sent out 1.8 million useless spam messages a day).

Anyways, I would ask the following..

How effectively will the penalty for spamming be?
How diffilcult will it be to apply that penalty?
Is there any loopholes that a spammer can use, such as using an account in another country for their spam base?

And just a note for the n00bs out there.. If a thread includes a link to the topic of discussion, please follow it and read enough to get an idea of what the topic is before posting something to the effect of "I don't know what you're talking about."

After all, that's usually why those links are posted in the opening post of a thread.
