As most of you know, I post in school for the vast majority of my active participations at AGN. I come to the science resource center every day for this. They're kind enough to let me in. However, recently, there has been a string of thefts of computer parts. I have to catch the thieves. What would you recommend for it, besides a camera?

There has already been a sign in sheet for the computers, but I doubt that anyone would actually sign in of their own free will. And besides, no one has to use a computer to snatch the Dell logo, or anything else. I've been put on patrol, Before school and 6th period every other day, and sometimes after school. There's a "gang" of computer nerds in here before school every morning that I have to fight with for the right to computer #1.

So I'm trying to catch these thieves. Any advice you could lend to a wary watcher of the sci res PC's?

Can't. The evidence has been ruined by the duct-tape they've placed over the machines.

Lasers. Lots and lots of lasers.

Try asking around, and seeing if anyone knows.

I would recommend a sign in sheet for each individual computer. Have the person using the computer sign a sheet for the computer number they're using.

And also, if your school still uses mice with the trackballs in them, turn the mice upside down so the trackball is showing. And after each person is done, have them put the mouse back to what it was like when they got it. That's what my math teacher makes us do with the mice.

And I think they've switched to red-eye mice, which don't use any .. spheres. Heck, Nerds use those little balls as currency. :p

Vigilance. Constant vigilance.

I'd spend as much time on the computers as possible, posting and occasionally looking up. Who cares if you catch them.

Or offer a monetary reward for information leading to the capture of person/persons responsible, and offer amnesty if they return everything.

Well, Sign in sheets won't work, unless you have a teacher in there constantly...

Not even those wireless cameras that mount anywhere?

If there were a way to force students to have to register every time they came into the lab BEFORE THEY ARE ALLOWED TO ENTER, then you might be able to use theft patterns and user habits to help track it down.

It sounds like it's going to take some inconvenient measures to prevent thefts or catch the thieves any way you go.

It's a pain, but make a parts sheet that the student has to sign and have verified by a teacher before using the computer. If a student signs in with all the parts there, and then tries to sign out with a few parts missing, you have your man.

Umm, no we don't. In reality we use porn CDs. The more that is on it determines how much it is worth ;)

This isn't far from the truth either...

I don't know if there's so much you can do about it.

What are they stealing? If they're stealing hard drives or CD drives or monitors, then the person watching over the lab isn't doing a good job. ;)
