How many heart containers are you supposed to need before you can pick up the master sword? I gave Link all 20 hearts and still he can't pick up the master sword.

The master sword requires 21 hearts to pick up as a special item. However, since you can only have 16 at max in the original, you need to check the '24 Heart Containers' quest rule, or change the required hearts in Init Data, page 8.

You can also change the amount of hearts necessary in init data.

Aha! That is helpful, now I'm getting somewhere. But I still can't quite figure out the init whatever it is to change the number of hearts required. This would be helpful because I might want to change the hearts required for other swords as well.

i'm pretty sure that stuff is random.

anyhow, the init. data. is in quest -> init.data.
on one of the later pages, it has "white sword hearts: XX" then, "magic sword hearts: XX", then "master sword hearts: XX" that's where you change it.
