I have yet to try this software, but I have a feeling I'm going to find it highly addictive. I've always been a fan of most things involving Mech combat. MegaMek promises to deliver a turn based strategic Mech combat experience based on BattleTech rules. You can play online, hotseat, or against AI. I can't wait to get home and try it out.

EDIT
Okay, as I continued my search, I found some other interesting projects that I thought I'd share with you.
http://bzflag.org/ - A 3D tank battle/capture the flag game. Real-time, I think. Offers online play.

http://lotgd.net/ - Legend of the Green Dragon. You whipper-snappers who don't remember the golden era of BBSes prior to the internet explosion won't know that this entirely webbased multiplayer text adventure game is a knock-off Seth Able's Legend of the Red Dragon. But you'll still find it fun.

There's a big difference between a 3D real-time Mech shooter game and a 2D turn-based strategy game. I like both, thanks.

True, true. I tried this software out briefly last night. Because my copy of WinXP is installed from a SP1a CD, the Microsoft Java VM is not on my machine and I had to install Sun's JRE. But once that was done, I could simply double click in MegaMek.jar to run the game. I didn't get much further than that, though. I'm gonna have to read some documentation before I can figure out how to play this game. Nonetheless, I find the prospect exciting, and soon hope to host some AGN Mech battles.

Hmm, I finally checked them out, and I have played LotGD. It's cool! Everyone go try it out.

Yes... those of you unfamiliar with LoRD or LotGD can think of it as an interactive "Progress Quest"

Progress Quest is way better than any of these.
In fact, I still play progress quest:

If you wish to play with me, I play on the Oobag realm.

That looks interesting. I'll probably give it a shot.

Another one that looks good:

http://scorched3d.sourceforge.net/

A 3D implementation of Scorched Earth. Still turned based, and basically simple gameplay. Features LAN/Net play.

The Scorched Earth 3D looks pretty good. Did you try it out yet fatcatfan?

Anything you can tell me about Progress Quest?

Progress Quest is a gag. It is a real program you can download and run. I say run because to use the term play is inaccurate. You let it run, and it does everything for you. I have a hard time describing it. Just download it and see for yourself. The fun will wear off in a few minutes, or at least it did for me.

I'll place that on my download list beside "Sea Monkey Aquarium" then fatcatfan. :)

Have you tried out the 3D Scorched yet? I loved playing Scorched Earth back in the day. Especially with the diggers, sandhogs, death's heads, and MIRVs.

Not yet. I was looking to do my own updated clone of Scorch in 2D, adding netplay and a plugin system whereby anyone could code and drop-in new weapons and guidance systems. That's when I came across this Scorched 3D. Now I've decide there are enough tank games out there. There's also a 2D scorch clone on sourceforge. There are lots of tanks games, but only those which mimic the mother of all games are worth playing.

My first run of Scorched3D in a single player setting satisfied me. The graphics were a bit sluggish at times, but that might be fixed with a download of DirectX 8.0.

I do wish you could enter the aiming values by typing them in, but the mechanism they have for aiming works well enough. Now if I could only figure out how to move...

UPDATE: Got DirectX 8 and turned off a couple of features. The explosions can still be slow as heck, especially in shot view.

Death's Heads rock! (Instant carnage)

Also need to figure out how to leave the results screen without exiting the program, oh well. Now I need to find an actual opponent.
