Tell me how much you paid for it and then I'll decide how "lucky" you are.

I feel sorry for you. You bought a Dell....

I built my own two weeks ago. About the same specs (BUT I CAN OVERCLOCK IT) But with an 80GB harddrive (40 is WAY TOO SMALL). Mine cost about $500. I can upgrade it a LOT for an extra $500. Then it would be good!! Dell is not recommended.

Of course if you custom built your computer it would be cheaper, but not everyone can do that. So it sounds like a pretty good deal for $1000.

I think Dell makes some nice stuff. My Dad bought a Dell when the company first started, and then later bought one with a Pentium III. My brother has a new Dell he got last summer. We haven't had any problems with them at all.

I can't wait to get a new computer. I'm waiting for the AMD 64 chip :D I only have an AMDK6-2 @ 523Mhz right now, but I figure I can make it last so long as I upgrade to the latest Mandrake Linux soon (9.2 is due out at the end of the month! yay!)

That's more or less the computer we (my brother and I) built. We had a very limited budget so we compromise by only getting a 2.0 GHz processor. The computer is running very nicely now.

It wasn't very hard either. Sure we had to do a little research, but you should do that anyways on big purchases like a computer. I'd recommend doing it to anyone.

I had a Dell before the one I built too. In fact, I'm writing this on it as we speak. (the new comp as of right now isn't on the internet. ) It's a good solid pc, but annoying to upgrade. You have to go through Dell because of custom parts. I think I'll be build my computer's from now on.

Can you build a generic laptop?

Do they sell laptop cases, motherboards, etc?

With a thousand dollar budget,I expect that you'd be able to afford a decent internet connection...

Wow... all these mud slings flying in the air... No one person can design the perfect comp... thats why people customise...
""Its shitty, its nice, its a pos... i could build this or i could build that..."" i think that it is all in the way you use the comp... I would much rather build my own than order ... but that is just my personal view.
