Flat for me, definitely. Operating it on it's side is much likely to give you a DRE of Death, in my opinion.

Mine lays down and it hasn't given me a single problem on DVD or Game.

Flat, I don't get how the game could stay in on it's side. But I don't think it makes that much of a difference, I just think they made it like that because it save space if it's vertical. (Good for people in dorms I guess.)

I have some Ps1 games that won't work unless it's vertical; it's strange at first but you get used to it.

I've had mine vertically since I've had it...

I actually seem to get fewer DRE's if its set vertically, so thats how I have my PS2 setup.

Ever since I sent my PS2 in to Sony, I've never gotten a DRE flat or vert.

I might send mine in to Sony, but I'll just have to wait and see.
I perfer it to be flat, but it takes up less space vertically, so thats how I have it for the time being.

I had my first ps2 on the side and it stopped working, so I keep the one I have now flat to the floor
