Wrigley Chews Over Idea of Viagra Gum

New York (Reuters) - The Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co. has patented a way to make its "Double Your Pleasure" slogan more potent: with chewing gum containing the active ingredient in Viagra.

But with about eight years left on Pfizer Inc.'s own patent for Viagra, the maker of Double-Mint and Juicy Fruit gum has no immediate plans to market such a product itself.

"There's been no development activity whatsoever nor is any anticipated at present," Christopher Perille, a Wrigley spokesman, said on Friday. He did not rule out the possibility that Chicago-based Wrigley might reconsider that decision in about eight years, when Pfizer's Viagra patent runs out.

The patent application, filed in November 2000, was simply one of many patents that Wrigley routinely seeks for products that might eventually be a hit with consumers, Perille said.

"We file dozens of patents on an annual basis with interesting or intriguing concepts," he said. "But there's a huge difference between filing for a patent and actually developing a product and finding one that's exactly right for commercialization."

According to Wrigley's patent application, the gum formulation is effective when it is chewed for at least two minutes. The gum would contain 5 milligrams to 100 milligrams of the active ingredient, sildenafil citrate.

The gum would have to be chewed at least 30 minutes before sex, also similar to the Viagra time parameters.

The application also suggests that gum might be a better vehicle to deliver the drug to the bloodstream, since it releases the drug more gradually than Viagra's pill form, which has caused gastrointestinal problems for some men.

Pfizer's patent on Viagra, a tremendously successful drug hawked by the likes of former presidential candidate Bob Dole and various athletes, doesn't expire until 2011. Wrigley could not sell its gum until after that point, when generic versions of the drug can be also marketed.

Pfizer currently has no plans to repackage Viagra in any other way, a company spokesman said. When the world's top drug maker was developing Viagra, executives considered selling it as lozenges or in other forms, but the company decided on the now-famous blue pill.

Sales of the drug totaled $1.74 billion last year.

Can you imagine what would happen if some eight-year-old boy found his daddy's "gum" and borrowed a piece? What effect would that have on him?

He'd probably say "where did that come from, mommy?"

Yeah, but physically, what would a drug designed to arouse fully mature men do to a young child? I'm talking organs-damaged-for-life-here's-a-brochure-on-adoption effects here. The gum would look good to him most likely, and he wouldn't know what it was. Just wondering if this is such a good idea.

Hmmmmm, my guess would be the kid would end up with a ruined "manhood" (wouldn't want to the kid if that happened)

I'm pretty sure it doesn't effect women, since it's designed for men. Your thinking of "Viagrette":p

I doubt that this will go through.. But it would be pretty funny if some kid just ate the whole packet...

It doesn't work that way. It works by increasing blood flow and inhibiting an enzyme called phosphodiesterase type 5. The kid did happen to get an erection after chewing the gum, there wouldn't be anything different about it (other than how long it lasts). The pill doesn't cause arousal, but it helps to maintain it by increasing blood flow. Is this why everyone picked the red pill instead of the blue one?

Carrot red... Do you ever actually comment on the articles you're pasting, or is it just that, "copy/paste"?

Yes, I sometimes do. But they are always open to debate and never useless subjects.

I'm just curious if the slogan for the new product would be "Double her pleasure. Double the fun!"

I'm not sure it'd be a good idea for children or females to take it. The active ingredient may have some interesting but likely undesired side effects..

First of all...Viagra works for most women, there are clinical trials going on now.

Second, Viagra wouldn't have to be altered much to be put in gum...I've chewed the actual pills myself, and the only difference is they work alot faster...and there's a higher occurence of that blue-vision thing :sb:

Actually, I remember reading an article a long time ago about the effects of viagra on women, and in some cases, it actually did help alleviate impotence in women, particularly in cases where women have lost a great deal of sensitivity that prevented them from experiencing any kind of joy in having sexual intercourse.
I think this is what eventually led to the development of less famous anti-impotence drugs for women.

As for a viagra gum, I'm sure it would be sold in a more discreet and controlled manner than regular chewing gum products. Much like nicotine gum is sold in a controlled manner.
