Vitamins Do Not Cut Heart Risk, Scientists Say

London (Reuters) - Taking vitamin E and beta carotene supplements every day will not reduce the risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke and could even be harmful, American scientists said Friday.

Their analysis of 15 clinical trials into the use of vitamin E and beta carotene found no protective effect against cardiovascular disease.

"Vitamin E just does not do anything in people who have coronary disease or who are at high risk for coronary disease, and beta carotene may actually cause harm," Dr Marc Penn, a cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio, said in an interview.

He added that people should be discouraged from taking the vitamin supplements because there is a very small increased risk of dying from the illness.

Beta-carotene was linked to a 0.4 percent increase in all causes of death and a 0.3 percent rise in cardiovascular deaths.

Although the results of most of the trials were negative, Penn said doctors have been recommending the vitamins to patients with a high risk of cardiovascular disease.

In a report in The Lancet medical journal, Penn and his colleagues said there is no evidence that the supplements are effective in reducing the chances of suffering from the illness.

"We do not support the continued use of vitamin E treatment and discourage the inclusion of vitamin E in future primary and secondary prevention trials in patients at high risk of coronary artery disease," Penn added.

But the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), a Washington, D.C.-based trade association representing the dietary supplement industry ingredient suppliers and manufacturers, described the conclusions of the analysis as irresponsible and over-interpreted.

"It appears they are simply trying to make headlines by taking old news and adding drastic and unjustified recommendations," John Hathcock, CRN's vice president, said in a statement.

He added that vitamin E and beta-carotene were safe and essential nutrients for health.

Penn recommended that clinical studies of beta carotene be discontinued because of its risks.

"What worries us is that there may be physicians using these things instead of statin therapy which has been clearly documented to save lives," he said.

This is why I am so heasitant to take any kind of medication, be it Tylenol or my asthma inhaler. I just don't trust modern science because of all the risks that are involved. I'd rather take some ancient Chinese remedy, because no body know herbal health care like the Asians.

My boss swears by this product line called Symmatry, and their things do work well, especially their brain suppliments.

I hesitate to take any kind of pain medication. I took two Acetaminphen tablets (off-brand Tylenol) when I broke my arm, and nothing else.

Nothing will save you from heart disease.

I found buried within a pamphlet, put out by the American Heart Association no less, that had an interesting statistic.

http://www.americanheart.org/downloadable/heart/10461207852142003HDSStatsBook.pdf

(It's at the top of page 8 of the pdf, or page 6 of the document.)

In 2000, 32 percent of deaths from CVD occured prematurely(i.e., before age 75, the approximate average life expectancy in that year).

In other words, barely 1/3 of deaths from heart disease occur in people UNDER 75. That means 2/3 of these deaths are most likely due to natural causes. Would heart disease be ranked so high in the "most likely to kill you" list if we omitted 2/3 of the cases?

This is why I only take Coral Calcium. When you are all dying from strange vitamin deaths, I'll be living young.

I'll make a deal with you all.

I'm willing to bet $1,000 to each of you that you will die sometime in your life. You can take whatever vitamins, diets, drugs, or potions you want, but I'm willing to risk a lot of money that eventually we will all die.

I can think of one group that won't die Atma, but as this isn't a religious thread, I'll not mention it.

Yep, everybody dies at some point in their life..

This is just another example that Pharmaceuticals are extraordinarily harmful. (or just ineffective; either way, someone's making 70 billion off people's suffering.)

natural vitamins, like the kind you find in unprocessed fruit and meat, however, are very healthy. And calcium is the healthiest of them all, but even though they put it in everything, you only ever get 1 or 2% of your daily requirement. For this, you need to do like Ganonator and start taking coral calcium, from Okinawa. (which is so full of calcium it's higher than the FDA's recommendation, but they've been slowly raising it over the years.)

True that... You give me aspirin for a headache, I'll gag and it'll stay for a while... You give me some goofy named asian tea, I'll be up and hyper in my own nature... There's also my firend's argument about todays health products...

Congratulations! Your friend is an idiot. There are conditions, the primary ones being old age and Erectile Dysfunction, that make it very difficult for some people to stand at attention. Viagra can solve their problem.

I imagine your friend is quite the frequent "Zoloft" user, as well.
