My comp has been attacked by something.. I think its called the trojan.backdoor virus..
It keeps shutting my comp down randomly as well as somehow circumventing norton anti-virus

Any suggestions before I break down and bring it in to the shop?

You can boot up in dos and run a virus scan on your drives.

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/552ba2f7636bedf088256818006f78bf/557dc15c724064ee88256c5900794093?OpenDocument

And Masamune... Gah. I should ban you for suggesting such a thing. Btw mattwdr, get your ass in chat.

well how about you get me a book or something that tells you all about viruses that shutdown your computer whenever the hell it wants to and what to do about them?

Use your boot up disk (Win98?)
When prompted boot up in safe mode.
(If you can not do at least this then you do have trouble.)
In safe mode you might be able to run virus programs.
Also try reinstalling your video drivers.
What you describ is like what started happening to me a whyle back.

... Reinstalling his video drivers is not going to get rid of a virus, Jemsee.

True, but what he describs sounds familiar.
If it is not a virus, it could be currupted vid drivers, and is wourth a try to see if it helps.
Doing a reinstall or a rollback to an older version should not hurt anything and should be a part of troubleshooting your PC.

No, what she means is that it may not be a virus. My computer had the same problem, but it doesn't do it any more now that my dad did something. I think it was a problem with the sound driver. Your computer wouldn't happen to be a Compaq, would it?

Edit: You got that post in before me. ;)

go to www.antivirus.com and run the free housecall online-virus scan. Make sure to check "auto-clean".

I had a horrible time with a few viruses awhile back and ck pointed me to the housecall scan and it works wonders. It also gets those viruses that can get away from norton and mcafee.

Good luck!

First, get as much info on the trojan as you can, and if you can't get a program to remove it, try to find out how to remove it manually. Also, try and see if you can find out the name of the program that runs on startup, and try to disable it in msconfig or in safe mode.

I use a few nifty programs to help keep programs from starting up behind my back. They're called Start Up Monitor and Start Up Control Panel. Check'm out here: http://www.mlin.net
