A friend of mine is having a problem with her computer, windows explorer occasionally kills itself and sometimes gives an error message. This has been happeneing for a while now and seemingly at random times. The last error she got was -

EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in
module OLEAUT32.DLL at 017f:653b155c.

(im talking to her over msn right now)
Does anyone have any idea to what this could be?

Any help appreciated

No idea.

But, I do have a suggestion.

Tell her to follow these steps:

1. Buy sledge hammer.
2. Smash computer.
3. Buy new computer.

:D ;)

... Or she can just try reinstalling Internet Explorer.

As a last resort, you could also backup everything useful and format your hard drive. But nobody seems to want to do that anymore.

Or you can just not use Internet Explorer. I've found Windows runs really well when you only use IE for file browsing, and use another program for your web browser.

btw, what version of Windows is it? Cause for some versions of Windows, there's a program called IEradicator that lets you 'really' uninstall IE, and if you want, afterwards you can reinstall a clean copy of the latest IE without all the upgrades and patches (which may have caused problems).

She has IE 6.0.
I think though we managed to sort it out - I found this http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=259737
and i told her to get the specified MCRepair.exe.

It seems to have fixed the problem as she hasnt had any problems yet (they usually occur often).
I guess her OLEAUT32.DLL just needed updating.
