I just found out I have a faulty version of the ps2, so I've been searching for some ways to fix them. I ran across this page and thought I'd post it for everyone who's having problems with their ps2. The things in the tutorial will void your warranty, but heck, if your warranty is expired then you don't have much to lose.

Sony will repair older models of the PS2 regardless if the warranty has expired/been voided.

Out-of-Warranty Repair
If your console is out-of-warranty (please refer to our Warranties section) and you would like it repaired, please send your unit to your nearest Sony Service Center (follow the "Obtaining Service" instructions below). Please be aware there is a charge for the repair of your unit (see below for fee details).

Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) warrants to the original purchaser that this product (hardware, game discs and accessories) shall be free from defects in material and workmanship for a period of ninety (90) days from the date of purchase (the "Warranty Period"). If this product is determined to be defective during the Warranty Period, SCEA agrees to either repair or replace, at its option, the SCEA product. You must call 1-800-345-SONY to receive instructions to obtain repair/replacement services.

I've had my ps2 for almost three years, so something tells me it is out-of-warranty. And frankly, I don't have the money to send it in. I know others are in the same situation, so hopefully this can help.

I called tech sppourt on my ps2 and they said that I needed to send it in and because it was an older model that they would wave the repair fee. I did as they said and got it back a few weeks later and it worked perfectly.

It never hurts to call and ask if they'll fix it for free. :O

Still, if you manage to fix it yourself that's all well and good too.

I did what that instructional page said and it has restored my PS2 to the point where it can read all formats again. PSX games, PS2 DVDs, and DVD videos. I honestly don't know if will read PS2 CDs, since I don't have any PS2 games on CDs.

You don't have any games like tekken tag? :O The coloration on PS2 discs also is simply to seperate DVD and CDROM discs visually.
