Please help... i'm new and can't get my gamepad to work!!

Someone please help me, I'm totally new to computers... i still have my atari for god's sake !!! I can't get my microsoft sidewinder plug & play gamepad to work. i have a new computer with xp on it. maybe i didn't install it right... but It seems to work fine using the keypad. is there anything i can do or am i out of luck? thanks guys !!

Use Joy2Key. Its a program that presses a key when you use a button on your controller. Heres the link:
