File-sharing sites allow trading of porn
By Brad Wright

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The same technology used to download music from file-sharing sites makes it possible to trade pornography, tech experts testified at a Capitol Hill hearing Thursday.

At a hearing of the House Government Reform Committee, parents were put on notice that they've got to do more than put porn blocking programs on their computers to keep x-rated images away from their children.

"Now parents may think that they are doing something about this problem," said Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif. "When they put in these parental control software programs like Net Nanny or Cyber Patrol, they think they can protect their children from this pornography. But our investigation also found that while these programs might work to keep kids from pornography on the World Wide Web, they do not work in the same way for file sharing programs."

How porn filters work
Many porn filters block Web pages from a user's computer by weeding out sites that contain words such as "sex" and "XXX." But file sharing sites, such as Kazaa, allow direct exchanges between one computer user and another. This peer-to-peer trading cannot be intercepted by porn filters.

"That's what makes it hard to police," said Randy Saaf, who operates MediaDefender.com.

Sounding the alarm for parents
During the hearing, a committee staffer showed how easy it is to access pornographic images. The staffer performed a Google search to reach Kazaa, then once on Kazaa searched for Britney Spears. Hundreds of downloadable files then appeared on the screen.

Committee Chairman Tom Davis, R-Va., was surprised. "This is really very alarming to me as a parent who thought he was tech savvy on this kind of thing to see how far this has gone," he said.

That children might download porn isn't the only reason for concern, Saaf said. He said his work has shown that at federal government agencies there are people who spend time at work downloading porn.

------------

Umm, duhh? Somebody who knows where the "on button" on a computer needs to give our legislators a computer lesson. Another thing on a related tangent: Porn is free on Kazaa. Music is free on Kazaa. The music industry does a lot of complaining. The porn industry has decided to embrace the distribution technology by putting banners with websites etc. on the movies it freely distributes. Why doesn't the music industry learn to live with and take advantage of available technology?

Hmm... interesting. I never knew file sharing allowed porn to be shared with other users. i mean porn movies and pictures arent files after all. Seriously, if you want to keep your kids protected from porn, dont give them a computer.

LOL Have they got nothing better to report about? I mean, all they needed to do to figure this out would be to get Kazza and run a quick search.

Porn filters don;t work anyway.
I've used various porn filters, usually on school computers, and they not only filter out more then they should, but they sometimes allow porn through.

And if our representitives didn't know that porn is available through file sharing, I wonder how in touch they really are with their voters.

And people wonder why I have so little faith in the US government when it comes to technology. They don't have a GOD DAMNED clue/ounce of common sense/etc.

The best form of controling what your kids see on the internet is called "Dont let them fucking use the internet." or "Watch them while they surf." People want software or the US government to parent for them and I'm REALLY fucking sick and tired of it.

This makes you wonder if any of them have got kids. We need fresh blood at Capitol Hill . But then again, let's keep things this way, shall we?

I would love to see Asia Carrera file a file sharing lawsuit, claiming that her vagina is intellectual property.:D

I seriously doubt individual pornstars would actually take it upon themselves to bring out lawsuits. If anyone were to do it, it'd be the movie companies (Wicked Pictures, Vivid Video, etc.)

I'm quite glad our government knows very little about technology.

Why? That way they don't know about it, and won't do anything stupid.

What's the big deal with porn? Try all you want, say you succeed in keeping them from seeing porn in your home, what's to stop them seeing it elsewhere? What's to stop them from going and doing what they want? You can't watch everyone always, and if you tried, they'd develop worse problems than looking at porn.

I'm pissed these old bastards even know the internet exists.

I'm surprised there are still people who haven't done this intentionally... I guess stupid people don't deserve free porn.

Well, the closest thing you can get to free porn that most parents don't even think to block is the television. Watch a music video on MTV2 and then tell me that isn't worse than porn. It's available to many young kids (unlike porn), rappers (who take up way too much time on MTV and MTV2) talk in a manner like "We be clubbin'" and "Smack dat ho" which is not only degrading to women, but also isn't exactly the greatest English. Also they get to watch Christina Aguilera being "Trrashy.

All these problems seem to originate from parents being lazy in the child rearing dept. and expecting someone else to raise their children. The Democrats say the government has the answers, and people have begun to believe it.

That's funny, because my little sister (she's 11 year old) was just telling me about how she was doing some research on a project she was doing about Avril Lavigne, and she came across a "nude celebrity" website. She found it at school. :eyebrow:

I agree with carrot red. Term limits for politicians in Congress would be such a good idea. Politics was never meant to be a career anyways, not by our Founding Fathers. It was deemed service to your fellow man.

And yes, Congress does tend to have to be told the painfully obvious sometimes. It seems that there is some sort of "Wall of Separation of State and Reality" erected at some point in time.

Ok... We're having a fucking war here, and they want to find something "new" to report... (notices the quotes around the word new...) Yeah, while we're reporting ancient history, why shouldn't CNN report on some "new" news about, oh, let's say how well the war in Vietnam is doing now...

Now, parents, if you're child is looking at porn, be proud of them... Serious, it (hopefully) means that they're straight, AND they're having sex with someone they love: themselves...
