What are you going to be using the computer for? Are you going to be reusing the hard drive/monitor/CD drives? Are you going to be overclocking?

Mobo: Asus A7N8X - $140
Hard Drive: Western Digital WD1200JB 120gb EIDE 7200rpm - $140
Video Card: ATI Radeon 9500 - $140; Wait on this, the price will drop once ATI releases their next card sometime in April
RAM: Samsung PC2700 DDR256 x 2 - $35 x 2 = $70
Power Supply: Antec Smartblue 350 - $55
DVD: Samsung 12x - $35
CDRW: Lite On 52x24x52 CDRW - $48
Processor: AMD ATHLON XP 2500 Barton - $175 This isn't top, but it's good enough
Case: Depends, I'll assume that it will cost about - $100
Heatsink: Thermalright SLK-800(A) - $40
Total - $933

If you really have $1500 to spend, you actually might want to swap the Radeon 9500 for a 9700 Pro. As I said, the price should go down, and currently it's the (debatably) the best card on the market.

Going with the 9700 pro would probably add another 150 on to the cost.

Dell makes really nice computers. You can get a pretty fast one, probably with a monitor (and Dell's great support) for less than $800 I'm sure.

The problem with Dell is their use of proprietary standards. I was talking to some people who's power supply, mobo and case weren't even ATX, thus making it impossible to upgrade one without upgrading the whole lot.

Yeah, Dell has good bargain comps. I'm looking at one for $450, with 40 gigs, 128(maybe 256)megs RAM, a 17" moniter, some other crap. But their $1000 comps are the same, with like 10 more gigs. They start low, but rise in price too quickly. Also, check out here (http://shop.explorermicro.com/acb/showdetl.cfm?DID=6&Product_ID=1892&CATID=15/?source=google2), thy havesome good, cheap comps. Just max the upgrades, buy a few spare parts. If you don't mind using Mac OS X, check out store.apple.com, you can assemble some good ones there (except moniters, theirs are overpriced).
