View Full Version : Current Star System Update

Our star system has been in place for nearly two years, and I've recently come to the conclusion that it's entirely counter-intuitive. As the lunatic responsible for its creation, I'm wondering what exactly I was smoking when I came up with it. With that in mind, I've made some changes to the way it works, and hopefully the whole thing will make a bit more sense now.

First off, the number of stars that a person has will still reflect their position on the staff. 1-4 for Regular Members, 5 for Moderators, 6 for Senior Moderators, 7 for Administrators and 8 for Owner. However, instead of a regular member's stars fluctuating between 1 and 4 as their post count increases, it'll simply move from 1 to 4 as their count goes up.

Star color, on the other hand, gets a bit of an overhaul. Star color will change as post count goes up for all members, even staff. Since you can determine a staff member's position from the number of stars they have (not to mention the actual title that appears beneath their name ;) ), it doesn't make much sense to also have them stay the same boring old green all the time.

Number of Stars:
1: Member (1-99 posts)
2: Member (100 - 999 posts)
3: Member (1000 - 9999 posts)
4: Member (10000+ posts)
4: Hosted Forum Moderator
5: Moderator
6: Senior Moderator
7: Administrator/Developer
8: Owner

Yes, I know that 10k members and Hosted Forum mods both get 4 stars. There are so few (read: 1) 10k members though that I figured it's an acceptable compromise, otherwise we either have to keep regular members to 3 stars, or bump all the latter ranks up another one and 9 stars for the owner is a bit much ;)

Color of Stars:
http://www.armageddongames.net/images/ranks/stars/star_purple.gif: 0 posts
http://www.armageddongames.net/images/ranks/stars/star_violet.gif: 50 posts
http://www.armageddongames.net/images/ranks/stars/star_blue.gif: 100 posts
http://www.armageddongames.net/images/ranks/stars/star_cyan.gif: 200 posts
http://www.armageddongames.net/images/ranks/stars/star_green.gif: 500 posts
http://www.armageddongames.net/images/ranks/stars/star.gif: 1000 posts
http://www.armageddongames.net/images/ranks/stars/star_orange.gif: 2000 posts

http://www.armageddongames.net/images/ranks/stars/star_silver.gif: 8000 posts
http://www.armageddongames.net/images/ranks/stars/star_gold.gif: 10000+ posts

Additionally (you mean there's more?!?), stars will now come in decidedly non-star shapes depending on the amount of time their wearer has been registered.

http://www.armageddongames.net/images/ranks/balls/star_red.gif First Year
http://www.armageddongames.net/images/ranks/diamonds/star_red.gif Second Year

http://www.armageddongames.net/images/ranks/rupees/star_red.gif Fourth Year
http://www.armageddongames.net/images/ranks/heads/star_red.gif Fifth Year
http://www.armageddongames.net/images/ranks/yinyangs/star_red.gif Sixth Year

BTW, the titles are staying the same. Since I unstuck War Lord's old post in favor of this one, here's the info again:

YOU TOOK AWAY MY SILVER STAR, YOU BASTARD!

Besides that,it's a nice change. I like how staff has ranking stars. Adds more color. Not to mention, I never really liked those seafoam stars for hosted forum moderators.

Maybe 4 stars should be 5k posts, becuse there are not many 10k+ members.

Other than that, much better.

BTW: GU have also reworked the stars just recently, if im allowed to say that, I should get more active here in AGN, so many new nice hacks.

Shadowblazer
02-18-2003, 09:27 AM
Well, the fact that very few regular members will hit 4 stars is intentional. Hosted Forum Mods get 4 stars as well.

Members used to be limited to 3 back in the day. When we instituted the colored stars, we allowed members to get to 4 since hosted forum mods could be distinguished by the cyan stars. Since that's no longer true, I figured it'd be okay if members could reach 4 but only rarely.

Since the stars basically indicate "rank," think of 1-4 as:
1 - Brand new user
2 - Somewhat Active
3 - Very Active
4 - Oh my God when do you have time to sleep?
(or Hosted Forum moderator ;) )

YOU TOOK AWAY ONE OF MY STARS! :glare:
but at least my colors change again, i missed color changes for about 2400 posts, lol.

actually, sb, the number of stars and the star colors always go together, so if someone has 1 post, they have 1 pink star, 3000 posts and they have 3 orange stars. maybe you could change it so the number of stars reflects their posts per day, so we can see how active they are, rather than have 2 systems that say the same thing.

Well since I have a decent amount of stars so I'm happy! Now everyone will brag if they reach a new star rank and not just the next post rank.

hehe true.

I remember for a brief time here (before War Lord stepped in with disaproval) Smods were allowed colors of their choice, and admins could use pretty much whatever they wished.

I wore black, and shortly there after gold.

I wore black, and shortly there after gold. Actually it didn't really have anything to do with War Lord's disapproval. While he did want star colors to be standard for staff, he still let it go. It wasn't until we switched to vBulletin and the stars hack we were using just didn't support custom stars that the practice was dropped. Since the hack updates your stars after every post, it wasn't possible to manually set custom stars for a user, as they'd revert as soon as a post was made. I only just recently coded in the work-around for that...

Really? Didn't it happen around the time he came in and laid down the law with his You want rules thread? I coulda swore that was a part of it.

Stars will now come in decidedly non-star shapes depending on the amount of time their wearer has been registered.

images/stars/balls/star_red.gif First Year
images/stars/diamonds/star_red.gif Second Year
images/stars/stars/star_red.gif Third Year

(And by "First Year" I mean that a user will use that image up until the day of their first anniversary, at which point their second year starts and they start using the diamond, etc).

Change is good!

Hmm... Pointy. Well, actually, it might not be that way at all. I mean, that star signifies a sort of "victory" instead of a date or anniversary. It marks something from the arcade, not from actualy forum posting details. Any thoughts? It's just mine, is all.

You should, as it will most likely remain unchanged for a few people who just can't seem to grasp changing the way stars look on the forums.

I see Shadowblazer also put in some code that allows us to view post count! Hover over someone's stars and bam, you get some juicy info. (not really juicy, may be the fact that I just masturbated to farscape)

So, whats next?

DarkDragon
02-18-2003, 06:25 PM
So let me get this straight: I lose a star, get my color downgraded back to "Newbie Yellow," have to wait another 1/2 year before I get bona fide stars instead of these diamonds, AND I lose both of my arcade stars, so that I can no longer walk around deluding myself into believing I'm a S. Mod?

Sounds cool. ;)

At some boards it happens, but here yeah that would be kinda creepy.

If forum games posts count I'm sure that would happen.

That's roughly an average of 27 posts per day.

I have to say I love the update...it always annoyed me to death that mad newbie posters get more respect from noobs than long-term members that post less, and think more before each post...now I have some second year diamonds to point out that I'm not the new kid on the block, even if I don't have three "stars", like heavy posters get quickly.

For some reason, none of the stars are showing up right now, though...all I'm getting are red Xs for all the Hyrule Night theme images, as well as the stars, but I saw them last night (when I was connecting via a 14.4kbps Cell-phone, rather than a 100mb/s network, like I am now...), it's a great change.

Probably a temporary IE glitch (or whatever browser you're using) ;).

Before, the only thing newbs would have had to go on in regards to your forum age would have been the number and color of your stars. I doubt any of them looked at your registration date (most people probably don't).

We had that once, but it was disabled after the Great Pruning, presumably because post count shouldn't matter to your respect on the boards.

If that's true, then why don't we just scrap the whole postcount system?

Because despite what some people may say, post count at AGN - as in all other message boards - is an integral part of the social caste system.
Be quiet, though... no need to give Shadowblazer any evil ideas.

But it has Karma. Yes, Karma is different from Post Count, but it nevertheless serves the same purpose.

The "Spam Rate" on AGN should supposedly be 0, since the moderators here do quite a good job banning spammers.

02-23-2003, 11:01 PM
You're right on that one...perhaps almost too good of a job. And you can only gain one Karma a day, and there are "Free Karma" topics there which the mods at gamefaqs never bother to shut down.

Shadowblazer

Post count is tracked because it does matter, as a statistic. It shows how active a member is and how much they've contributed to the boards, discussion-wise. In that regard, it is a valuable guage of a person's standing in the community, or at the very least their notoriety ;) A member with a high post count is obviously vocal and well-known.

Problems arise, however, when people take it beyond the "statistic" level and become obsessed with raising their count just for the sake of raising it, as if it's some sort of game and by raising that number, they can "win". The way I see it, if a member starts replying to threads not to add to the discussion, but because they want to make that little number go up, then their post count has essentially become worthless. It's no longer displaying how active that person has been in the community, merely how many times they've managed to click on the Reply or New Thread buttons without spamming themselves into a ban.

Well today alot of members hired their rank and knocked me down a bit. I don't think it was because if lots and lots of posting I think it was the fact they all posted a few more times which knocked me down a bit. There will soon be two people with 4 stars. I think he/she has around 9,600 posts.

Good job SB, I love the new system.

ah i just noticed when u hovered over it you get post # :P thx system. Yea i like this idea of stars/colours/and the like. It makes it more of a community where people understand what they stand for and mean. I doubt people would spam if their wasnt a post count but that is no reason to get rid of the post count entirely.

I'm just curious how this works for people( like me) who uses the "extremely small and slim" system, without stars, avs & such?

I was just wondering will you ever create something or put back the stars for arcade winners?

I think that the changes are for the best and that i wont have very many stars anyways for a while cuz i wasnt on the site for almost 5 months!

I have to say, this is quite neat. Kudos to the maker.

It was Shadowblazer who redid the star system, and for the best. At first, I wasn't very happy about it (I had so many stars :p) but now I've gotten used to it.

I may be jumping the gun, but in 5 months, we're gonna need a 5 year star.

I was wondering about that myself...perhaps we could hold a contest?

i dont know of anyone who's been here for more than 3 years, or has a 4 years anniversary coming up...

I've been here for more than 3 years, so have a few others. War Lord and a few other staff members will have been here for 4 years next spring.

What can I say? they're using the 4 year stars right now. I thought AGN was made in the middle of '99?

EDIT; Looking at the joined dates, our first member joined in 1969 and our last memeber will join in 2004. we have a lotta stars to fill in...

was it necessary for you to revive a topic for that? that's bordering on spam again and you JUST came off a ban. and i'm currently being overwhelmed with complaints about your posts this evening. i have a feeling by the time i'm done weeding through them, you're going to be banned yet again.

Well, so long as the topic is revived, I have a question.

<- See those stars over there? I just had my 3rd anniversary here (joined in April 2001), so shouldn't they be rupees?

That features not working for anybody right now, so don't worry.

Hmmm, well, a few weeks ago your stars would be those skull things if you'd been around for 4 years.

Hm. Those "skull" things, .. rather look more like Kitsune heads to me. Awesome pips. If you ever need pips drawn for you, BTW, just ask me. You probably have a whole line done already though.

And if it wasn't you, who could it have been? .. Actually, I'd rather not know. It could cause a lot of turmoil on the boards.

How so, exactly? Besides SB, we have two other admins and developers who are regularly active and who have every right to tinker with the vB code.

Incidentally, Eckels appears as an admin on the Forum Leaders page. Has he been promoted?

Actually, those 'sculls' are the map of level 9 in the second quest of Legend of Zelda. I think originally it was suppossed to be Ganon's head.

It seems nobody's posted in this thread for almost a year...I just noticed an inconsistancy, tough...

Darth Chronic has now reached the "Lifeless" (10,000+) postcount, but only displays 3 golden heads...while 10,000+ posts is listed as giving four "stars". Not sure whether that means it was decided to leave regular members at 3 stars even after reaching 10,000...or just that 10,000 posts = 4 stars wasn't added to the hack when the star system got its most recent fix, but I figure either DC should get his four stars, or the first post should be edited to not say that 10,000+ posts gives four stars.

I know this thread is old and no one has posted in it for awhile and all, but seeing as it's stickied I guess it's ok....

I'm assuming the system is broken again as my star color and shape are wrong? Actually it seems everyone has the same shape and color star so I guess it is broken. Any plans to re-implement the system as it's posted here? I liked how it worked and all the variety is nice.

I think very few members' stars are red or blue, or even missing (like Pablo). These are probably glitches or whatnot, since I think nothing has been done to fix it. It's probably not hard to fix this problem, actually; it was like it before, it can happen again.

EDIT: It seems that more colors are coming back. I'm seeing orange and black, too, but only on the members with titles (Programmer, Senior Mod, etc.).

what is the current system? if these things are post count and operator status based, what is the point, anyway? seems redundant, to me.

No system currently. It's on our to-do list.

No real purpose. Just nice to have. Eye candy, if you will.
