Indeed. This particular peice was made in 1986 by an anonymous BBS user. Hand made, very fine craftsmanship.

I don't know that such programs were very common 1986. From what I read on the site from which I got it, there were a few digitized ones, but also many hand made pictures. I wouldn't put it past a very bored person to come up with something like that.

Nevertheless, it does seem like a rather incredible feat and you may be right about it's digitized origins.

I saw somewhere online where a guy made a Quake binary that lets you play it in ASCII...ASCII Quake!!! Argh! It acutally looks neat.

They all used to be done by "hand". The programs avaliable back then made obvious mistakes, so very few people used them. You had to spend too much time touching up the product.

I was a bbs user back in the late 80's and I have quite a few interesting ascii pieces from then that were done by "hand". I even made a few myself. I'll try to find the diskettes that they're on...you'll be amazed at some of the creations. Some of them had to have taken 5+ hours...and some of them are quite "revealing"... ;)
