Storyline screens are accomplished by just popping a layer over another screen. On the base screen, Layer 0, stick four stair warps. Stick the green/blue square smack in the middle of these so as soon as the player makes a move, he warps.

On Layer 3, draw the background you want to show.. then you can play with Layers 4-6 for character sprites, treetops, speech bubbles, or whatever. Link a bunch together to make a "slideshow" sort of cinema scene.

It IS possible to have automatic movements in the sense that the player sees sprites walking around, interacting, and so forth, but only using tile or combo animation. I dont reccomend using combo animation- you can, in theory, accomplish exactly the same sort of choreographed cut scenes that you see in games like FF4 with it, but the work involved is absolutely crushing- until we get a third party combo animation editor ( FATCATFAN! WE NEED A THIRD PARTY COMBO ANIMAITON EDITOR ) it really isn't worth it. Stick to tile animation and choose what the scene shows to make it work.

As an example, check out Project z in my yahoo breifcase.
