View Full Version : When will we stop calling it a build?

The question is in the thread. Why don't we just move on to another version like 2.0 or 1.93. I know what the builds are. They are unstable versions. But it that were the case, then we wouldn't stil be calling it 1.90 (163). 1.92 wasn't that stabel either.

I addressed this a while back, but nobody gave me the time of day..

way back when, every time ZC was updated, the version # was changed.. there were no betas to speak of. Ever since interest picked up and DN was in charge, every new version is like b145 or b146... we don't get a new version, just a new beta.. very interesting if you ask me.

I think its time to change the number. We have been using a versoin with the number 1 for a long time. I think it's time to go to 2.

2 should have all of the bells and whistles.. i would expect it to have a higher resolution, windows based questing, and ... Ok.. so I only have 2 real ideas. It needs to be overhauled anyway.

Okay. Here's how it works:

I got the code at 1.84. Each time I made a few changes, I'd update (at least in my head) the version number by .001. So, the next version was 1.841, but was only released to a couple of beta testers. However, since only the first 2 digits past the decimal point could be stored in quests, the true quest version didn't change. Eventually, I worked up to 1.895. So, I went through the true versions of 1.85, 1.86, 1.87, 1.88, and 1.89. So, the next public release was 1.90. Since I didn't want ZC to get up to version 4.x before I had enough for another full release, I added build numbers, which gave me at least 255 steps between each version number. I want each full number to be a real step up from the last version of the previous version number. So, 2.0 should be a ton better than 1.90 (the last full release of the 1.x series). 1.92, when it becomes a full release will be renamed to 2.0.

So, that's why we have builds.

Excellent. So from there on out, new features and all will be added to 2.0, so what will the next version be?? just kidding..
(btw, for something like AOL, the final release was the original #, so while I'm testing 8.0154323xxx or something, that keeps getting bigger until the final release of 8.07302502, and then the release is called 8.0GM. So theorhetically, the final final final version of this ZC would technically be 1.0??)

Thanks DN. Now I get it. So in other words, we won't be getting to 2.0 till we hit a build number of 255. That could be awhile. ;) And that would deffinetly make it a better than version 1.9.

Uhhh..... I don't get why you people stress so much over the numbers. Sure, it helps keep track of things, but, Zagg, does it really matter if it's 1.92 or 2.0? I don't see why it does.....

 It really doesn't matter. Still, does it really hurt to ask? And why everytime you post something, it involves me?! Find someone else to pester!

That's not what I said. What I said was that with builds, I have 255 steps before I am forced to change version numbers.

Yeah, then he can make it Version 1.93 Beta 1! Then the chain will start all over..;)

And Zaggarum, pestering you is soooo much fuuuun...And 1.92 is already so much better than 1.90 I don't think they're really comparible (sp?) anymore..

Unless you decide to change to using integers for those values... but that would be rather pointless.

Anyways, a "build" is a common term used with programs that are updated frequently. It means basically the same thing as saying version.

So I guess the real question of this thread is when is the next final version goign to be out.

Hey I don't care if you pester me KJAZZ. I really don't care if Dark does it either. I just felt like posting that. :shurg:

And my mistake DN. So when you get to 255, you are forced and that means, that you would start at 1.93 (beta 1) or maybe 2.0 (beta 1). If I am still wrong let it go. You can't help me.

I guess the real question is what new things could possibly be in anything beyond 2.0...

I know lots of stuff. Look at the future plans not even half of them have been implented yet.
