You would need to do multiple things to make a game. If you were to do everything by yourself it would take an extremely long period of time. If you wanted to make everything from scratch you'd have to make models, textures, skins, the 3d engine, maps, sound effects, music, and even more. If you want to get started on things you should look into one or more of these things. Going to digipen isn't all necessary to learn all this.

For programming you could pick multiple languages, I myself would reccomend C++ or Visual C++. Although there are alternatives such and you could begin with a higher level programming language just to get the hang of it such as Visual Basic, or Pascal. Some compilers for C++ are Visual C++ and Borland.

For music i'd suggest looking into OC Remix. This is a community of people who like to remix music from games and have some tutorials on how to do this. Although they are specified on remixing music from games you wouldn't have to do that you could follow through but make your own music instead. There are many programs you can use to make music with. One I know about is Fruity Loops. Some others are AcidPro and Cake Walk.

There are multiple places you could go to learn about making 3d models, such as the above. As well as there are many programs you could use to make them. Two popular ones would be 3d Studio Max, and Maya. Maya and 3d Studio max are quite expensive programs. I do believe Maya has a free demo or something you could get. There is another one called Milkshape which isn't too bad and also has a shareware version.

For textures and that of 2d sorts you could look up at yaxay. There are tons of programs you can use to make them, you could even us MS Paint if you had to. Two of which I know of and use would be Jasc Paint Shop Pro and Adobe Photoshop. Both are commercial software. For textures i'd recommend Adobe Photoshop, it has tons of filters you can use to make things with. A freeware program you could pick up would be The GIMP. http://www.gimp.org/ I haven't tried too much with it, but when I was using linux for a period of time I messed around a little bit with it.

You really cant do it alone if you want it to be profesional. You would have to join a company, or atleast create a team.

I wouldn't say "join" a company. Generally you're hired and you do what they hired you for. Most of the time you should already know how to do what you're going to do for them. If you look at their web sites sometimes it will say Employment Opportunities or something similar and it might say what they're looking for or if they're not looking for anything.

You say you dont want to program? Then the first thing to do is find a Head Programmer. From there you should start a webpage. Then find the rest of your team. Then outline your development process, make sure it is detailed and informative or you will not get it going. From there release some demos and you will attract a fanbase. Then release your game and make money!

That's a pretty lofty goal you have set for your self. I'm not saying it's impossible... just not easy. Like Flash said, first you have to pick a discipline, i.e.. programing, art design, writing, sound tech.
ONLY after you have a discipline and MASTER it, and have a few years experience would you even be CONSIDERED for a lead game designer position. You MUST know at least one of the aspects Flash has listed inside and out if you ever hope to get in the industry. You can't just go and hire people for your team if you don't know any of there jobs. Usually a lead designer knows ALL the jobs on the team and would be able to fill in for any member of the team if they had to.

I'm currently in college studying computer programming, and I hope to get into the video game industry myself. Blizzard currently has a position open for Senior Game Designer go check out the qualificatons here (http://www.blizzard.com/jobopp/senior-game-designer.shtml)

Electronic Gaming Monthly just did an article on becoming a game designer. They list five diffrent schools, including DigiPen. They also suggest that you know a little about skills besides just design, so that you know what's functionable. They suggest some books to read about game design. Maybe you should stop by the book store and take a look at the mag. Of course, the best way to get some practice in is to use programs like Zelda Classic or RM2k. :)

Get a pad of drawing paper and start designing levels. Just start designing. One of the most important parts of design a video game, is the actual design process. Once you have the general layouts of levels, scenarios, characters, story, done, then you can more easily get to work on the actual video game, using the design documents to flesh out the game, a blue print for what to create. Practice with the editors that come with games. The Tony Hawk series has a level editor, as well as Time Splitters 2. Using stuff like Open Zelda and Zelda Classic are good examples too. Play a lot of video games, good ones. Try to get a feel of their design, why one thing is done, how the player interacts with the levels, is it too hard, is it annoying etc...

As a game designer, your probably going to want to have some experience in programming, because a designer needs to know what the programmer can do. Might not be a bad idea to take Computer Science (Programming) classes at whatever school your at, assuming your at least in High School.

Shigeru Miyamoto is a good example of someone to learn from. Read all the interviews you can about game creation, there is a lot to learn.
www.miyamotoshrine.com is down right now, but it contains many interviews.
See if this archive of that website will work and check out the interview section.

To get into programming for games, use Blitz Basic. Its a programming language made specifically for making video games, and its not hard to get into, and has a free demo. If you learn how to program a game, then you can design a game.

For help on Blitz Basic go to www.blitzcoder.com

Another good Game design and program website is Gamasutra. It requires a account, but the account is free, just sign up and log in.

Here's the beginner's section from gamedev.net

The video game college, DigiPen, funded by Nintendo of America, has a Project Fun program going on.

Look for colleges near you that offer programs dealing with video games.

A career as a video game designer is my sole reason for going to college.
