mandrake 9.0 and apache trouble

i wanted to host some web pages from my computer, but whenever i try to write to the apache html directory, it says i do not have permission. Any ideas?

Never messed much with linux because I didn't like it that much. Although try logging in as root, or going through the console as root and write the directory.

ok, here is an update of sorts. i can't figure out how to put anyfiles in any directories other than my "lynerd" file inside the usr file. it seems when i try to put plugins for flash in my mozilla plugins file it wont let me do that either....

Because your user account doesn't have access to do it.
You need to log in as root and edit the folder's permissions and give access to your user.

how do i do that? i gave a root password, but i dont know how to log in that way? is there a certain name i type into the login screen?

There are three main ways to access folders other than the /home/user directory under Mandrake.

You can either log in as root on the login in screen(just type in root where the name goes, then root's pass where the password goes), or you can use the su root command at a command line, or you can click the K menu in KDE and go to 'Applications -> File Tools -> File Manager-Super User Mode'.

You should just be able to set up apache so you have a directory called 'public_html' in your home directory, which you can then write to at will, without needing root permission each time. Then your site address would be something like 'http://youriphere/~yourusernamehere/'

I wish I could tell you how to do it specifically, but when I installed Linux, my friend helped me through most of it and set lots of things up for me, which I just use now.
