Project 64 1.5 is the best emulator (IMO of course).

You can grab it and others at www.ngemu.com

Project64 works very well, runs lots of games. You need a fast comp though (mines 1.7GHz and I have no problems). A good graphics card also helps.

I never used emulators before. Mabey I should try it sometime.

1964 8.4 is very good. It's faster then Project 64. If you turn on the assume 32-bit funtion in 1964 the speed will really increase but some games won't work with it on. Zelda 64 and Mario 64 seem to work and even Majora's Mask. You need to read the Advanced_Users.txt to learn how to enable it. By default it's off because it's very new and doesn't work with all games.

It comes with Project 64s plugins because they don't have any good plugins. Sometimes games that don't work on Project 64 can work on 1964.

project 64 is definately the best if you have the right plugins. I use graphics=jabo's direct3d7 1.40 audio=azimer's v0.30 (driver rev 2.2) controller=n-rage's direct-input8 1.61. I dont know where to get them but it works fine for me like that.

Well that's a tough question really. Because it depends what matters to you. If you need playability/speed, and you wanted to play, say Goldeneye, UltraHLE is great. However youneed glide graphics support.

However, say you have a computer with plenty of power, say, any AMD clocked at 2000mhz, project 64 is for you. It can run probably the most amount of games, and quite well. It's just very cpu intense. My system, AMD Athlon 1800+ XP @~1533mhz cannot run Castlevania 64 60/60 FPS while emulating the primary frame buffer. Without emulating the primary frame buffer (it'll cause the main menu to be a bit glitched, you can't see through the glass selector) it'll run perfect.

Now, say you want to play GoldenEye 007? On my system it drops down to 45fps sometimes. So you really are looking at needing a system of 2ghz for 007...

You need to worry more about other things other than just your processor. For example if you have an older card(DX6 Generation) it may not run as well especially since they're older. You can get plugins for Project 64 that are for DirectX 6 and they may run better. DirectX 7 generation cards should work fine might be a little slow depending on which card it is again. DirectX 8 should run pretty damned close to what it should be. DirectX 9 generation should run it perfectly, the only card that is DX9 is the Radeon 9700(9000 is too but its basically a piece of shit), and of course there are to be more DX9 cards such as NV30(Nvidia's new card they're working on) and the Radeon 9500(should be coming out in at least a couple months).

I didn't try messing around very much with my Voodoo 5 5500 with emulation with N64 a lot because it ran quite slow. Although after I picked up a Radeon 7500 so I could run newer games most games ran a lot smoother some games such as Perfect Dark and Goldeneye run a little slower but I can still play them if I wanted to.

Just to let you know that doesn't show your video card. Go to display settings in control panel. Then click settings and it should say *Video Card* on *Monitor*.

I have a 350 MHz and my computer runs Project 64 fine. The sound is crappy though, so I just turn the speakers off.

Are there any good N64 emulators for Linux?

I think 1964 has a Linux version, not sure.

You realize, "it runs fine" is a broad statement. What does it do "fine"? What is "fine"? Fine by my definition for emulation is 60/60 fps. On a 350mhz machine, goldeneye will play like shit on pj64. However, less cpu intense games, will be better.
