Finally, a way of going forward instead of trying to protect a shitty and outdated business model.

Those who buy Bounce get a CD key, similar to what you get in Starcraft, Half Life and Quake 3. Except this CD key allows you to register with a Bon Jovi club that gets you extras that you don't get if you simply pirate the music.

What a novel approach. Bravo to Bon Jovi for finally 'getting it'. After all, aren't CD keys pretty useful in detring people from pirating games like quake 3 and half life, due to the way the companies handle them? Of course, if Bon Jovi takes the same approach, they wont have to worry about CD keygens.

That won't really help because a professional cracker would pop that CD into pc and probably use an altered CD generator designed to crack it like VG CDs. Of course, I don't really give a crap about extra features anyway as long as I have the songs I want.

There will always be crackers, and they'll always ruin things. Plus, it may be difficult to crack the CD key. If I were running the site, I'd run it until people started cracking the CD keys, then post a message with the IP addresses of all users who possessed multiple instances of the same CD key and I'd tell the internet these people are why you can't get your extras anymore. ;)

Someone will just post the CD key.

The people who run this are probably smart enough to tell the service to disallow previously used keys.

Nah... it would better if the record companies made good on a threat to go after individuals who pirate their music. Make examples of 'em, which might in turn discourage some people from piracy.

Either way though, I think the record companies are screwed. Music as an industry will probably collapse, giving way to a patronage system whereby the only people to make money off of music is to recieve some kind of donation for their music.

To be more blunt, music will be run exactly as a business. You want to be a singer, then you write music...you provide lyrics...you do everything. They help you record it. If it sells, great. If not, too bad.

The RIAA won't go without a fight. They will either adapt, or they will die out.

Somebody's been reading Slashdot ::glares at Alex:: :D

I read about that too, it sounds like a new and nice approach to all the mess that's going around about digital media infringement and all.

On a side note, we should really get people here to read Slashdot if they don't already, it's awesome for tech news ("news for nerds, stuff that matters")

Slashdot is good except for the excessive anti-microsoft it generally has. Plus it seems, at least according to members, to have stories only a year or two late. In any case I hope music won't be run like Cyclone said. Otherwise only a few exceptional people would "get in".

I don't post at Slashdot, their forum threads grow way too fast for anyone to follow them. But, there's a good mix of pro-ms and anti-ms posters, you'd be surprised.

Basically, I just read the headlines. They must change the main page and add new stories at least 3 times a day. They are very up to date.

I'm curious to see how all the music stuff will go. I'm not too worried cause I don't download music anymore, but I still rips cds and turn'm into ogg files, but I'm allowed to do that for my own personal enjoyment.
