IP geography?

Does anyone know how to find out where a person is from based on their IP address? Don't different parts of the IP address refer to geographic locations? I have been unable to find a geographic key for this. Just curious if anyone knew.

The only things I'm sure of...

127.0.0.1 - Thats you.
192.168.x.x - Reserved for LANs. Internet addresses should never have this as their IP.

There is no way to tell just by looking at the IP, as I understand it. You have to ping/traceroutefinger them.

whois database can be very helpful, and can be used with Ip's as well as Domain names. Check out www.arin.net

There are also a few programs on the net that say they find the location of someone by an IP, but I am skeptical.

A program you may be interested that combines the use of the traceroute, and whois lookups, is VisualRoute. I can't promise it will be acurate, but it looks neat, regardless. You can find VisualRoute here (www.visualroute.com)

FYI, 10.x.x.x and 172.16-31.x.x are also reserved for LANs ;).
