I found this mod that changes the Quake code to run like Doom 3. Yes thats right it adds stencil shadows and per pixel lights to quake.

Right off the web site.

Tenebrae is a modification of the quake source that adds stencil shadows and per pixel lights to quake. Stencil shadows allow for realistic shadow effects on every object in the game world. Per pixel lighting allows you to have fine surface details correctly lit. These are essentially the same algorithms as used by the new Doom game.

Tenebrae "should" run on a lot of graphics cards, first I will give some explanation about what card is best for tenebrae. (I don't say it's THE best card)
1) Geforce 3,4
These use only 2 passes per light and are the fastest cards to run tenebrae on.
2) Geforce 1,2
These require 6 passes per light and are decent cards to run tenebrae on.
3) Others
Those others are actually ATI cards since those are the only ones that support all the necessary (ARB_)extensions for tenebrae. These cards span just like geforce cards several generations so performance may differ.

It brought my PC down to it's knee's. I have a Radeon and this doesn't like ATI cards seeing he used a Nvidia SDK kit. Anyone with a Geforce should run this fine.

The great thing about this is that it makes Quake look like Doom3. Would be interesting to see what someone could do to Quake 2 or other games that have a sourse code.

You can download it for PC here (http://users.pandora.be/hollemeersch/blackrose/tenebrae/tenebrae_bin.zip).
You need a copy of quake.

Some pictures for you all to druel over.

Very interesting how the lights change when he moves away.
Screenshot #2 (http://www.users.qwest.net/~amerrill/quake/snap0077.jpg)
Is that shadow effects I see there?
Screenshot #3 (http://www.users.qwest.net/~amerrill/quake/tenebrae_quake_64tap_4xfsaa2.jpg)
More shadowing effects and some cool bump mapping.

Check out the rest of the pics here (http://www.users.qwest.net/~amerrill/quake/)

I just got GLquake to run on my Linux machine (and the reaper bot mod). I am so happy :D I just have to reVIS my pak files so water transparency works better.

I was gonna try that tenebrae, but I have no need to. GLquake is enough for me. Plus, I dont' know if they wrote a Linux binary version of it.

hey Duke, I hope you don't mind, but I put links to the screenshots in your post because the actual images were taking forever to load. This way people can still read up about it, and check out the shots at their leisure ;)

Excellent. Anyone who finds a way to make Quake 1 more interesting should be given a hefty stipend of drugs and whores.

Well whats interesting is how it makes Quake look a lot better. The creator is thinking about doing this to Quake 2 seeing that the source is out for it.

Would like to see this feature on Q2. ;)

I've seen this, and in fact was just about to post about it.

Great, now even Quake won't run on my Rage Fury Maxx... :P

It really shows that Quake was well-designed if people can extend it in this way. I hope Doom3 has similar levels of extensability.

It will be five years before anyone will be able to modify Doom 3.

Would be nice to see this in Quake for Xbox or DC if it's possible. An early tast of Doom 3.

I feel stupid for this, but how do I get GLQuake? I remember trying to run it once, but back then my PC was pathetic and I never could get more than 2 frames per second. I'm willing to give it another try.

It's about half way down.

Remember to delete the openGL.dll if you don't have a 3Dfx card.

Ah, Planet Quake. I love that place.

GL Quake runs at about 40 frames per second on my Linux machine (523 megahertz k6-2 with 256 megs of sd-ram, and a 32 meg geforce2 PCI). It's plenty fast (and this is at 800x600 resolution). Once I get some reVISes pak files, I'll be able to play it with the water transparency with no slowdown.
