Correct me if I'm wrong, but I could've SWORN that back in beta 104 and even on 1.90, you could set an item and a special item on the same screen. Yet, I just tried it with 163, and the special item is nulled out. What gives?

Really? Certain Zelda Tricks depend on this!
That room where you could take either one, is now
probably defective by what you are saying!

I personally never noticed this before.
Could you give an example?

Sure. Make a room with something as the ITEM.
Then make the room a special item room, press A and set the SPECIAL ITEM to whatever you'd like, so as long as it's not the same as the item. Now, for me, this instance takes place in a dive for item room. So, set flag 13 over some water, and test.

Oooooh. (Not OOOO!, Oh.)

Maybe it's time to take this up with a moderator? Hmm? Whatever they say goes. Maybe Jigglysaint might have an update for us that wasn't quite placed in the beta updates yet. I have been checking there like an anxious... something, waiting for some more juicy details.

I think I'm blind about this whole beta update forum/thread. Either that, or the old zc beta forum is public now.

It is? Is it?

Yeah, it's in Zelda Classic Discussion, Somewhere at the top. Check in annually to see the greatest at work.

(Yes, that was a suck up. No wait, it was a complement. No difference to me. (-which is yet another compliment. :) ))

If you grab the item, the spec. item disappears. If you grab the spec. item, the item disappears. Therefore, you force the player to pick.

Wow. I made a TAOYW room without even realizing it.

As far as I know, it has always been that way.
