My brother got a broken computer from his friend, and we think the processor might have fried. The heatsink's really stuck onto the processor.

Is there any correct way to get the heat-sink off?

What'd you get a broken PC for?

If that's the case you should probably remove the processor all together and buy a new one compatable with that motherboard, provided the motherboard isn't damaged.

Cheap parts, is my guess.

Yes, if the heatsink is melted the processor is screwed. I hope your motherboard is intact. Processor's aren't too expensive, but a new mother board can really eat into the ole' bank account.

A processor is less than a new console. ;p

If your heatsink is truly melted then It's a sure bet that the motherboard (of PLASTIC) would be melted and screwed as well..

I was afraid you'd say that.

Exactly

The motherboard's fine. Except that it's a compaq. The local computer shop said the processor was fried, but there's no burnt areas that I can see. I still need to take the heatsink off.

Why? Just take the CPU out all together as it's screwwed anyway. No point in removing the heatsink by itself.
