Check out this link (http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,3973,365073,00.asp) about Gamespot's new download manager (http://gamespot.com/gamespot/misc/dlxpage2/index.html). The article is vague as to whether the software actually contains it, but the user agreement allows for the company to, without user consent, automatically upgrade the software. It also allows for a DRM (Digital Rights Management) program to be run, which can pay attention to every time you open the file and send it back to both Cnet and MS. The program can be used to control demos as well, and the article says it could simply delete the downloaded program after a specified amount of time.
What is happening to the internet? It's getting to where I want to have two computers, one hooked up to the internet and one with no connection, just to avoid spyware. It really pisses me off. If Post were to put a new ingredient in Rasin Bran and not denote it on their label, they'd be in a mess with the FDA. Why should software be different? Shouldn't the user know what they are downloading?
