set a transparent colour in whatever gif editor you are using.
i find the best program to make transparency is MS frontpage, theres a transparency tool there that lets you click the colour you want to make transparent.

It's that thing that looks like a shovel. Actually it comes with Office, but that's my favorite program for doing quick and dirty things to gifs like setting transparency and resizing :)
