java is making me mad!

Your browser either supports it or it doesn't. Most likely, it's just disabled. :p

It is a slightly confusing site. But you will find a download link for Java 2 1.4. Get the JRE or SDK it doesn't really matter. If you use IE obviously get the IE plugin, if you use someting else, get the Netscape plugin. I don't know the exact address.

It does. In fact there is even an option to download Opera with Java bundled. But there is also a version without Java pre-installed available.
