My guess is what the title of this topic says. I think this representitive(Howard Berman) has realized that the SSSCA(what's that called now?) will not pass, so he has drafted another bill discussed in the above CNET article.

Lovely, eh? Give me your opinions. And why's it always Democrats who propose these sort of things?

Um...if this passed, and some big company did try to do something like this, wouldn't it be as simple as blocking one harmless little IP address from using the network? Or, better, the IP block? If companies did try to falsisy files and such, and the company could get the info on the location and IP and such, all companies would have it blocked instantly.

Not to mention that it makes hacking legal, short of destroying the computer. That means that after this bill passes, anyone is legally allowed to look around your computer, or put a file on your computer, etc.

I know why its the Democrats...

Democrats recieve millions in donations from the entertainment industry, particularly Hollywood. It is also the entertainment industry that stands to lose money from piracy, when people rip movies and music into files and give them out all over the net through file sharing programs.

I, however, like this bill, its putting the responsibility of copyright enforcement not on the government, but in the hands of copyright holders themselves.

What I don't like is the precedent this could set... this could wind up opening a very unpleasant can of worms.

Quoting the page:

• interdiction, in which a copyright owner floods a file swapper with false requests so that downloads can't get through;

• redirection, in which a file swapper might be pointed to a site that doesn't actually have the files they're looking for;

• and spoofing, in which a corrupt or otherwise undesirable file masquerades as a song, movie or other file that people are seeking.

I'm quite sure the first one would be illegal. Next, the internet isn't solely in the USA, therefore I think this kind of bullshit would cause lots of problems.

I doubt anything will ever come of it. If these bastards ever did try to attack people's pcs and such, hackers would just kill them, and well, thats the end of that.

Ya, so anyways, it's just stupid crap.

Agreed. Part of me understands intellectual property issues, but I was also sort of hoping that the internet would be a money free, government free, restriction free forum for products and ideas.

I think it still will be. There are 934093409879487984 people who use and understand the internet and there are like 15 old white guys who want to control it. We will win I think.:)

Yes we will. As those people that want to control it don't know shit about how it works.

I find that funny.

Old White Guy #1: Hey, let's control the Internet.
Old White Guy #2: Okay, how?
Old White Guy #1: We'll draft a bill protecting intellectual property on the Weeb. (Yes, WEEB.)
Old White Guy #2: How can you protect their property?
Old White Guy #1: We hack any offenders. :evil:
Old White Guy #2: Do you know how to hack them? I don't...
Old White Guy #1: Neither do I.

Uh-huh...

This is bullshit. Hopefully they won't let this through. GWB, now is NOT the time to be compromising.

EDIT: The media is screwed if they actully do this. A quote at the bottom is very correct. Why would we buy from them if they hack into our computers?

Alex, this isn't socialist. This is facsist(sp?).

I've previously contacted my local senator about this kind of stuff, about the SSSCa(it's now the CBDTPA) actually. And he agrees with me that this kind of legislation is not needed. He also says congress should proceed with extreme caution when it comes to the internet. BTW- that would be Senator John F. Kerry a Democrat from Massachusetts.

While we're at it, why don't we put responsibility for enforcement of murder statutes in the hands of the victims' families? I always like to watch a good old-fashioned lynching or three.

Fascists are socialists, as both sides seek to extend government control over economic resources.

Not quite, my History teacher would always drill the difference into out heads.
Fascists want complete control over everything, with absolutely no sharing of resources. Hitler is perhaps the best example.

Socialists want everything shared, and the government tends to force that. Cold War era Russia was not Socialist, despite the name(United Soviet Socialist Republic), it was Communist. The best example of Socialism I can think of in the modern world is the Amish people, the best non-existent example I can think of is depicted in Robert Heinlien's Beyond This Horizon.
Of course pure socialism doens't work with large groups, so Democracy needs to be added in very quickly, and some Capitalist values would help to balance it out.

Just so you know, ALL politicians suck, reguardless of democrat or republician or whatever they want to call themselves.
