What exactly is it, I'm hoping it's just another name for windows 98 so I can get my scanner up and running. So does anyone know?

Win9X means Windows 95 or 98. instructions often use this term because 95 and 98 are basicly the same thing.

The x is 9x signifies a 5 or an 8 so that the writer doesn't have to write out Windows 95 and/or 98, so they can just put 9x, meaning either 95 or 98.

It's also for WinME. Win95, 98, and ME.

Well some things that work for 98 or 95 may not work for ME and vice versa. It often can be substituted though. Except I myself would put ME on my computer if it was the last OS on earth.

2000 is more business based and ME is for general home use.

Win 2000 has the special memory manager to keep Windows running even if programs crash. It's based off the NT kernal so it's a hell lot more stable then the Win9X line. No Dos backwards compatibility. So sound in Dos is a no. It's a all together better OS.

The problem is playing those old Dos games. W2k will not have sound support for Dos. Dos likes to access the hardware and conflict with Windows. This way without real Dos support it's more stable.
