I finally convinced my parents to get high speed internet. I had cable a few months ago and it was cool but I think DSL is fster and cheaper...can someone gimme Pros and Cons for each or just tell me which is better?

DSL: More expensive, but tens times better. It's faster and more reliable.

Cable: Cheaper, but the network goes down from time to time and its slower.

DSL: slightly slower, constant speed
Cable: slightly faster, can go slower and faster

They're about equal, it's individual areas that things change with. With DSL, the speed depends upon how far away you are from the central dohickey. With cable your speed changes based on how many people are signed up in your area.

It depends on the service providers. Some cable companies do a better job of providing cable access than DSL providers, and then vice versa. From what I know, cable modem service here, provided you pay for premium service, is superior to DSL in speed and reliability.

Also, Cable Modem service is much more widely available than DSL, since cable companies already have access to the proper infrastructure to make speedy internet access available.

Well here on Cape Cod cable is faster but DSL is more reliable.
Cable lines can be blown down easier by the wind, while phone lines are always the last to go during a storm.
Overall they wind up being about equal, and it really depends on your price range and what you need. As far as I know Cable can handle higher bandwidth, so if you're going to be setting up a web server, cable would be better; but otherwise DSL would probably be fine.

actually cable upload speeds suck and they slow down the download speed of you and everyone else.

Most cable companies tell you your not allowed to run a server using their lines.

Well mine has excellent upload speeds(~200k per second, while download speeds are about the same), and they allow me to run a web server.

The thing is, DSL is consistant. Cable can vary, but can be a LOT faster (or a lot slower). If not a lot of people live in your area: CABLE!

I would get DSL, but I don't think $69 a month is something I can afford. Also, there is a $99 setup charge.

Is that even reasonable?

I dunno, but I pay 45 a month for cable, free instalation, and I'm happy with the deal I'm getting.

I have DSL, always on, no limits, no problems. I don't know about cable.

Don't try to compare DSL and Cable everywhere. You should only compare cable and DSL in YOUR area to find out what is better where YOU ARE. I have SWB ADSL service for 50$ a month, installation/modem was free. I don't have alot of problems with it. It's hell of better than dial up aol.
