Do you pay any attention to the rating of a thread? It seems that most of the threads that have a rating only end up with 1 to 3 votes, with the majority being 5 stars. Do the stars have any affect on whether or not you read the post?

Not the slightest bit

None whatsoever.

Ever since I knew someone (I won't say who) voted 1 star in every thread they post in, no matter what, I stopped looking at them altogether as it's pointless and an objective opinion of others, completely irrelevant to my own.

Much like I don't listen to movie critics, I don't listen to thread critics.

I think the thread rating, if signifigant at all, is only that to the topic starter. And given that people really don't care what they're doing when they rate threads, I don't think topic starters need to be concerned either.

As is evidenced by the rating on this very thread.

And no, I had nothing to do with it. I've never rated a single thread since the feature was introduced.

...which, if you think about it, is even more proof that the rating system is useless...:D

I neither pay attention to ratings, nor rate threads.

If people were more responsible with ratings, they might be useful.

For example, if a thread starts to degenerate into a flame war or a discussion about C-Dawg's genitals, you'd give it a low rating to warn other people not to read it.

It's true. I have thought thread rating could be used more wisely.
but everyone would have to use it.
When I first started posting I would rate threads but after awhyld stopped.
There was a thread awhyle back that I started and some one gave it a 5 star which I felt kind of good about.
The stars do not relly influence if I read or not to read a post but it does attract my attention.

I have rated 1 thread since I've been here, and that was the DC's Pics thread in the Anime Forum (and I only did it because someone voted it as a 1 star so I voted to put it back up at 5) ;)

I don't think the ratings provide that much in the way of additional information. Many 5-star threads are those you figure will be good from the topic title (like "Upload your screenshots here"). And many 1- and 2-star threads are those you know from the title are hotbeds of trouble (like "Xyzabc is a flaming idiot").

I think it is pointless, personally. I don't pay attention to them, and they aren't necessary.

Thanks to the absentminded haze that is my perspective of the world, this is the second time I've ever noticed or thought of the rating system. Now that I see it there and am thinking about it, I couldn't care less about it and doubt it will affect which posts I read.

Don't count on this being the next 'AGN craze' - 'Rate your threads NOW!'

The stars look pretty though:D
