i was cleaning up my hard drive, and found this folder:

http://invis.free.anonymizer.com/http://ruins.yoll.net/1.jpg

containing these files:

http://invis.free.anonymizer.com/http://ruins.yoll.net/2.jpg

notice how much space it takes up...

what is this folder? do i need these files?

{edit: i have since removed the newgroups from Outlook

[edit2: whoa, is deleted half the files, and the size is now only 6mb...

Usually I defend microsoft... but it could be related to some information on the following website:

http://www.fuckmicrosoft.com/content/ms-hidden-files.shtml

I might actually be switching to Linux... I'm not sure, however.

i dont know what dbx files are for, but once i deleted the newsgroups, files disappeared.... the size was drastically reduced... i dunno...

i dont like the idea of my email activity being kept as a log on my comp somewhere

There are other files on your hard drives that are hidden from your OS totally and from DOS. Even if you search with the -s switch in DOS or enable viewing of hidden files, they still dont show up. MS logs all websites and emails you have sent and received... not exactly kosher in my book.

There are utilities to clean up unneeded files, even the really hidden ones. The news from the anti-MS site really isn't anything earth shattering.

EDIT: Those files by the way are your Outlook (or Outlook Express) folders. That's where they're stored.

No, you can't delete these hidden files. Please read the article. These files are completely hidden from even your system... you cannot delete them even if you were to find them (with a complicated procedure that the website will explain)

Toolie I read the article, you're nearly quoting it back to me. I use utilities to clear unneeded files every now and then. I read the article, did the procedure exactly as stated, and found that what files there were contained barely anything. Why? Because of my utilities...

Well, besides taking up hard disk space, those files really aren't gonna do anything, unless you do something really bad and the FBI confiscates your computer. Normally, those files stay right there-very hidden in your computer. It's not Microsoft is collecting the information in their database or anything...

Fuck switching to SuSE if it costs me $80, however. I'll just stick to XP.
