I was just on a game download site, and I noticed that they have some of their bigger games in something called rar format. I went ahead and downloaded winrar, but I just wanted to check on something before I have to spend about 6 hours in a que for 9 files..

Is a rar basically a broken up zip file? Like.. I'll need to download all 9 files to make the rar complete.. Is that a correct assumption? Any help'll be appriciated.

yes, RAR is either that, or an alternate form of the .zip file

winRAR has a lot more features than winzip, but it a bit togher to use.

lets put it this way,

RAR is what ZIP isnt: EFFECTIVE

the .rar file format is a different type of compression to the .zip. It can compress multiple files into either an archive of one file or multiple. If it creates multiple files, then winRAR creates .rar, .r00, .r01 etc for all the "volumes" it needs. You need to download all the volumes (files) and then open the .rar file with winRAR to extract the archive.

WinRar compresses stuff a lot better than WinZip in my opinion, and I use it to send stuff between myself and a friend.
