Check out http://www.fuckmicrosoft.com and go to "Microsoft's Really Hidden Files". You'll find interesting facts about files M$ doesn't want you to know about.

Go to your site and they'll tell you microsoft is evil. Go to microsoft.com and they'll tell you all is well. Go to aol.com they'll tell you it's so easy it's #1. Go to dnc.org and they'll tell you the president is a moron.

:spin:

You shouldn't believe everything you read.

Seeing is believing, and I saw these files with my own eyes though Linux. I found old emails, forums pages, ect.

As for 1 and 2, I couldn't agree more. But, as for three, sometimes. Oh, and BTW. GOD BLESS AMERICA! :lmao:   :lmao:  (No problem with America. Just with Bush.)

Thanks for the link Lord Magus! I wanna get shirts for our whole Linux Users Group at school! (we just got it started :D I'm excited about it!)

I was really shocked at that hidden file stuff. Wonder if it's still like that in XP, where users don't have DOS to access those files? Anyways, I wanna check out the rest of the site too.

I knew you'd like, vegeta. ;)

Does your school allow stuff like that on shirts?

I'm thinking of also getting a t-shirt and maybe one of those mugs.

Btw, my name doesn't have a space in it. (My sig image doesn't count.)

Okay, maybe some of that stuff is kinda creepy. But the authors are also blowing some things out of proportion.

Overreaction #1: Microsoft is going to great lengths to disguise these files.
Answer: Not likely. I knew that they existed even before reading this article, because I stumbled across them while searching for something. Without even trying. If I can find these files while searching for something else, they must not be too well-hidden, eh?

Overreaction #2: The Find Fast utility indexes every human-readable file on your hard drive.
Answer: DUH! That's the whole point! Think about this for a minute. Suppose the user performs a search for a file containing some specified text. The normal Find utility has to scan every file on your hard drive, looking for that text. Not surprisingly, that takes a long time. The alternative: Do what the Find Fast utility does. Build up an index that's easier to search than the hard drive as a whole, so that searching goes faster. Thus the name Find Fast.

Please keep in mind that I am not a Microsoft fan, and strongly disagree with some of their practices. I also despise the Find Fast utility, and do not have it installed. However, when you take things like this and overreact, you tend to damage your credibility.

Good points, inori.

I've known about all these files and there are several utilities I have used before to clean them up. Nothing earth shattering here, just a few files that take up space...

There are other ways around this besides going through DOS...you can modify your settings and add a line of code in a certain place that orders an "override" of this function. I haven't done it, but a my group partner in my MIS class does it on everything he has.

It doesn't just index files for Office though. Why should your dat files and .qst(yep they have text in them) be indexed too?

And after poking around some of those hidden directories and files, and know that I now what is in there, I hate MS even more. I have found old emails of mine, old forum pages, the private folder of my yahoo briefcase, porn popups, and some of my passwords in there; and I do regulary delete temporary internet files and clear the browser cache.

And btw- does anyone know where the registery is kept? I'm in Linux and would like to poke around in it.

You do realize this is more of the US Government's own doing than Microsoft. This is one of the Police/FBI forensics they ask (bribe) companies like Microsoft to implement to aid them in catching cyber criminals.

They don't tell you about these so criminals do not know about them and find ways to clear their history.

The first and best line of computer security - physically keep other people away from your computer. I really don't care what's in these files, because it's all somewhere else on my computer anyway. I don't plan on giving anyone else unsupervised access in any case.

The registry resides in different places depending on the version of Windows. I can't remember the exact locations, but you can find out in Microsoft's site. (I remember this because my registry got corrupted on my laptop, and I had a choice of repairing that file or reinstalling Windows. The latter would have been quite a distasteful option, as I'd have lost a lot.)

good point. But any company that implements these has a problem. The potential for loos of privacy is immense. What if MS got their hands on these files? I don't want them knowing about what I do.
With other OS's(like Linux, MacOS, BeOS), there isn't any sort of feature like that.

Does anyone here know how much data leaves the average Windows computer, with internet access? Quite abit. More data than should be leaving it. I've noticed an odd speed increse in Linux with my cable modem, that can only be explianed by spyware.
