I'd like to start making some of my own Avatars instead of leeching them of other sites. Does anyone know of a really good FREE photoshop program best suited for Avatar and sig image creation purposes?

The GIMP.
Hands down the best free image creation and editng program available.
There is only one small problem, it is only for Linux....

Well said. In fact, it reminds me so much of Adobe Photoshop, it's scary (cause I like PSP better than Adobe Photoshop by far)

I think you can download a free shareware version of Paint Shop Pro. Might want to check it out, it's worth buying and it's less than $100 (last time I checked. either way, beats paying $300 + for Adobe) http://www.jascsoftware.com

Can it do all the really cool things like shimmer and smoke effects?

Sweet! You are the man Kalin!

Only downside is I don't think you can use GIFs. Unless you want them for animation, that sucks. Otherwise, use PGNs at 256 color! They're similar to gifs: they can be set to have a max of 256 colors, are good for graphics, can do transparencies, and the file size is smaller!

I've replaced gifs and tiffs with pngs actually. I love pngs (a open source file type might I add :D)

You can use GIFs. All you have to do is download this (http://www.iki.fi/tml/gimp/win32/gimp-gif-1.2.3-20020310.zip) and put it in the plugins folder
