MS Paint sucks.
Try downloading the Paint Shop Pro shareware, it's some nice software.

Not if you put in the right chips and things. Old computers can be pretty good if you have the right stuff.
P.S. Mine only saves to bmp. and pcx. also.
One problem I had with MS Paint on the older computer was, for awhile it opened .pcx files fine, then later it wouldn't open them anymore. I also have the same problem on this computer, don't know why it does that on both of them, probably because microsoft made it.
Oh you downloaded a service patch, didn't you.............
THAT is what's bad about Microsoft, they taketh away some good features to give you new ones..................
I almost NEVER convert bitmaps to jpegs, they blur with MS-Paint, Instead I copy and paste then into ULEAD Gif animator 3.0 and now I have a CRYSTAL sharp gif.........................
I almost never update anything unless I have to (I updated some media players so I could play newer movies). I don't like to change anything, because it always seems to cause problems. I always turn .bmps to .gifs also.

I can save jpegs and gifs in MS Paint. No wonder someone I knew couldn't view pcx. I couldn't understand why.
I use MGI Photosuite that came with this computer. It lets you choose how much you want to compress a Jpeg instead of the default of 75%. The problem with gifs are they only show 256 colors and can be really big if used for large images like screen shots of Starcraft. Gifs are better used for transparency and when a lot of colors repeat in a line, like a background, because that's how a GIF file compresses. Jpegs may be glossy, but will show all the color gradients that a gif can't.
